I have a new laptop with windows 7. Trying to copy my files from windows xp share to windows 7 share. I can copy one or two. But when I try to pull whole folders from winxp to win7 I get the following windows 7 error message. Error 0x80070079: The semaphore timeout period has expired If I try to push the files from winxp I get a few files transferred, sometimes less than one, then the process bar stalls and eventually I get the winxp error message Cannot copy "filenamex": The specified network name is no longer available. I've tried win7 remote differential compression disabled. I've tried the win7 network driver Large Send Offload (IPv4) disabled. I've tried the win7 network driver Large Send Offload (IPv6) disabled. I do not have WOL Speed in advanced driver settings. Nor does the wireless adapter have these settings. I've tried disabling Superfetch. I'm using windows firewalls on both systems. I'm using AVAST on the winxp box, no spyware or adaware. I'm using windows security on the win7 box. Again I can transfer a limited amount of data. But I have year's worth of photos and songs and collections that I would like on my new lightweight Win7 laptop. KMS

Hi, Before going any further, I would like to verify that did you connect Windows 7 and Windows XP through a router? It’s a possible that the problem related with security settings on router or network driver. Please reinstall the network driver both on Windows 7 and Windows XP, also update the driver to the latest. If you are using a router, please check security setting of the router whether it was set to WPA-PSK. If is, disabled it. If the issue persists, please temporally disable the firewall, or login with Safe Mode with networking for test. Also you can login with Clean Boot. Before I go through the hassle of reinstalling all the drivers on my existing XP box and my NEW laptop. (Less than 2 weeks old). I'ld like to know how going through the router would sometimes let me copy files and then eventually stop them. That doesn't make sense to me. The router should either never allow file transfers or always allow file transfers and should not stop transfers after the fact. The same with antivirus. If the antivirus or Windows Firewall prohibits file transfers then it should always do so. I can copy small files. I can copy one or two sometimes. But all large transfers error out. Which brings me to question how it may be a driver software issue. Does the driver decide to error out because it suddenly gets tired? It has nothing else to do but serve me by reading and writing files. I wouldn't write a driver that gives up early would you? I've been using NFS since the late 80's. All of a sudden it no longer works? The thing that changed is I now have Windows 7. Of course I also have daily updates to Windows XP and Windows 7 so one can't say they haven't been changing. Oh yeah AVG is updated too. And so is Windows Firewall and Windows Security Suite. Dumb. Really really dumb. I should be more surprised when everything works correctly. The router on the other hand doesn't do updates. HMMMM. :) So now that I've ranted. My XP box has; 1394 Net Adapter, Driver nic1394.sys, Version 5.1.2600.5512 (xpsp.080413-0852) NETGEAR GA311 Gigabit Adapter GA31IND5.SYS Version 5.608.1009.2003 built by WinDDK. It also has two disabled internet adapters; 3Com 3C920B-EMB Inegrated Fast Ethernet Controller, el90Xbc5.sys, 4.31.00.0000 3Com. NVIDIA nForce MCP Networking Adapter with four drivers, Driver Version 2.8.1.0? jedih2rx.bin (Unknown), jedireg.pat (Unknown), NVENET.sys (4.14.01.0281 Nvidia), and ramsed.bin (Unknown). My next question has to deal with which drivers to update on the Toshiba Laptop? Since both wireless and hard wired ehternet have the same problem. Is hard to believe that both sets of drivers are causing the same exact problem. Hi, If some security settings has been set on your router, it will cause the timeout when copying files. And you can update the wireless card or network card drivers on network: Right click “computer”-----manage-----device manager-----network adapters-----right click the network card-----update driver software-----search automatically for updated driver software.
